Rice County is made for curious travelers.
Come See What You'll Find
Spend an afternoon exploring local shops and restaurants. Visit the Coronado Quivira Museum. Follow the historic Santa Fe Trail. Discover bronze sculptures scattered throughout our communities. Enjoy a local festival, take in the outdoors, or stop for a photo at Lyons' larger-than-life tribute to its salt-mining heritage.
Some of the best experiences here aren't complicated. They're a conversation with a local shop owner, a quiet Kansas sunset, a community event you happened to find at just the right time, or a place you didn't know existed until you took the turn.

ABOUT RICE COUNTY
Small towns. Rich history. Genuine Kansas.
In the heart of Kansas, Rice County is a place where wide-open landscapes, welcoming communities, and generations of stories come together. Here, you can slow down, take the back roads, explore a historic downtown, discover something unexpected, and experience the kind of hospitality that makes you feel right at home.
From Lyons and Sterling to Little River, Chase, Bushton, Geneseo, Raymond, and Alden, each of our communities has its own character—and its own reasons to stop, explore, and stay awhile.
A Place with a Story to Tell.
The story of Rice County stretches back centuries. Francisco Vásquez de Coronado traveled through this region in the 1540s in search of Quivira, and generations later, travelers followed the Santa Fe Trail across the Kansas prairie. Today, visitors can still explore historic trail sites and learn about the people and events that shaped the region.
That story continued as communities were established, agriculture took root, Sterling College was founded, and the discovery of salt near Lyons in 1887 created an industry that remains an important part of the area's identity.
History here isn't hidden away. You'll find it in museums, historic buildings, trail markers, public art, courthouse squares, and landmarks throughout the county.
