WORLDS LARGEST SALT SHAKER
Worth Our Weight in Salt
Standing 15 feet tall in downtown Lyons, the World’s Largest Salt Shaker is a larger-than-life tribute to the salt industry that has shaped the community for more than a century. Built to resemble a classic diner-style salt shaker, the metal-and-glass sculpture is roughly 64 times larger than the real thing. Its story connects back to 1887, when crews drilling for oil and natural gas instead discovered the underground salt deposits that would become an important part of Lyons’ economy and identity.
The shaker is located at the corner of Commercial Street and East Avenue in Salt Miners Park, where it stands in front of the colorful “Worth Our Weight in Salt” mural. Installed in 2024, the attraction was created as a way to celebrate local salt miners while giving visitors another reason to stop and explore downtown Lyons. Today, it makes for a memorable photo stop and one of Rice County’s most unique roadside attractions.
